My story
Why I Chose Adolescent Psychology
I'm Rishiraj, the founder of RishiCoaches. My work sits at the intersection of adolescent psychology, emotional wellbeing, developmental support and future planning.
After working 10+ years with adolescents across the corporate and community sector, I realised that adolescence is not simply a transition between childhood and adulthood. It is a period in which identity, emotional regulation, relationships, independence, academic direction and future decisions all begin to come together — and it is also when many teenagers quietly go through some of the hardest experiences of their lives.
Yet most teenagers navigate this period with support that is either reactive (waiting for a crisis) or absent entirely — and most parents are left guessing whether what they're seeing is normal development, a passing phase, or something that needs attention.
That gap is why I do this work. My focus is on helping teenagers develop the psychological skills, self-understanding and decision-making capacity they need to build their own future — and helping parents understand what their teenager may actually be experiencing.

I also work with parents
Parents are often the first to notice that something has changed — but they aren't always sure whether they're seeing normal adolescent development, a temporary struggle, or something that requires professional attention. My work with parents focuses on understanding what may be happening, responding more effectively, communicating without escalating conflict, and knowing when additional support is appropriate.
Psychology meets career decision-making
Career decisions during adolescence are rarely just about choosing a course or occupation. They involve interests, abilities, values, identity, confidence, family expectations, uncertainty and a teenager's developing sense of self. My career guidance work therefore combines psychological understanding with structured career exploration, assessment, conversation and decision-making.

My professional approach
Psychology-Informed
Grounded in psychological and developmental principles — not guesswork.
Developmentally Appropriate
Adapted to the teenager's age, developmental stage and context.
Strength-Based
We identify what's working and build on it, rather than defining a teenager only by problems.
Collaborative
The teenager, parents and I each have a clear role in the process.
Practical
Psychological understanding translates into useful change in everyday life.
Scope-Aware
When an issue needs a different level of care, I make that clear and refer appropriately.
Professional boundaries
RishiCoaches provides psychology-informed adolescent support, counselling and developmental programs within the scope of my professional training and practice. Educational content and online screening tools are not substitutes for professional assessment. I don't provide medical treatment or prescribe medication — when a concern falls outside my scope of practice or needs that level of care, I recommend appropriate assessment, specialist referral, or a psychiatrist.
What I don't do
- I don't reduce every adolescent problem to a diagnosis.
- I don't use online quizzes as substitutes for professional assessment.
- I don't promise instant transformation.
- I don't force a teenager into a career because it looks successful.
- When a concern requires specialist care outside my scope, I don't try to handle it myself — I recommend appropriate referral.
